Collagen Explained: Hydrolysed Collagen and Type

When choosing a collagen supplement, you will come across terms like Type I, Type II or Type III collagen. But what do these labels actually mean, and do they still apply once collagen has been hydrolysed?

To understand this, it helps to look at collagen in its natural form. Collagen types refer to the way collagen is structured within the body. Different types are found in different tissues. Type I collagen is mainly found in skin, bones and tendons.  Type II is the primary collagen found in cartilage and Type III is found in the blood vessels

These classifications are based on the original structure of the collagen.  In its natural state, collagen is a large protein made up of a distinctive triple-helix formulation. It's this structure that determines the type. 

But before it can be used in an oral supplement, it must be broken down via the hydrolysis process. During this process enzymes break the large collagen molecule into much smaller collagen peptides. This is what makes the collagen easier to absorb . 

One the collagen has been hydrolysed, the original triple-helix structure is no longer present.  Because the structure has changed, it is no longer classified as Type I, II or III collagen. Rather it becomes a collection of bioactive collagen peptides the body can digest and absorb.
